The journal I chose was The Elon Journal of Undergraduate Research in Communications. From looking at some of the articles that where in their latest journal they seemed to focus a lot on what is happening in today’s media. From how women are being treated in things like rap lyrics to TV broadcasting. They also have a few articles about the media coverage from the previous election.

Listening to misogynistic content may also attribute to listeners’ “expression of similarattitudes in
their own lives, including accepting the objectification of women” (Dixon, Zhang, & Conrad, 2009, p. 348). Half of survey respondents agree or strongly agree that rap/hip-hop music glorifies domestic violence, and when these messages are conveyed to listeners, it may contribute to the “creation of a social climate in which violence is viewed as acceptable” (Adams & Fuller, 2006, p. 953). Therefore, rap/hip-hop music’s portrayal of domestic violence matters because of the significant influence its misogynistic messages have on audiences. This study found male and female college students’ listening behaviors greatly affect their perceptions of misogynistic lyrics. Survey results indicate a positive correlation between misogynous thinking and rap/hip-hop
consumption, which supports previous study findings in which “greater frequency of listening to rap music was associated with more positive attitudes toward and perceptions of rap music” (Tyson, 2006, p. 215).

This passage has a lot of sources as it came in the conclusion and was wrapping up the paper. The writer first reports about the listening of rap and hip-hop music. She than builds off that by bringing in a survey that agrees with her previous source. By doing this she is making her argument more credible. Lastly the author takes her first two claims and uses it to show the correlation that rap/hip-hop have with peoples attitudes and perceptions of rap music.

From what I have gathered from this journal, it seems that they talk a lot about what is going on in the media today. With doing this there are lot of articles that deal with the relationships that people have with the media and how these relationships affect people. From the article I read the author used a lot of her own data including surveys. Since this is a communications journal a lot of the articles will need input from the community that they are writing about

I chose an article out of the Student Pulse Online Academic Student Journal. This article was called The Changing shape of America’s Youth: Combating Childhood Obesity Using the School Nurse. In this entry there are two very obvious times the author helps the reader understand a definition of a word. Both of the times the author does this it is two of the main words coming from the title of the article “Obesity” and “School Nurse”. At the beginning of the article the author talks about obesity. “The unfortunate reality is that an increasing number of these children are at a higher risk of early death because of childhood obesity. Despite being preventable and treatable, childhood obesity is an epidemic (CDC, 2011)” She will later in the article help the reader understand what exactly obesity is. “Obesity occurs when fat accumulates in adipose tissue and the organs, and is a disease “that promotes disability, decreases productivity, and shortens life span” (Ahima, 2011). According to the Centers for Disease Control (2011)”
The Author will once again take a definition that most readers will probably know but, she makes sure to give off the exact definition that she wants because it is a main part of the paper. The author will introduce the concept of a school nurse as, “An untapped resource for combatting obesity in a child’s life is the school nurse. It has been over 100 years since the introduction of school nurses” The author than in a way very similar to the way she gave a definition of obesity gives a definition of a school nurse. “The National Association of School Nurses (2010) provides the best explanation of the current role of the school nurse:
“School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success and life-long achievement and health of students… School nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety including a healthy environment; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self advocacy, and learning.””
As you can see the author once again takes the word she is defining and using a credible source and attributes where she got the source from. Both these definitions are helping the reader understand very early in the article as to what the author is going to write about. Now the reader will have a technical meaning for the words.

Preparing a Hospital and Community for Disaster **
Article one**

“However, due to the aforementioned recent disasters, it has become clear that each hospital needs to tailor its program to its specific region and make changes according to each disaster event. Each plan should differ depending on the type of disaster; for example, a hurricane needs a different set of procedures than a bioterrorism attack of anthrax.”

Article Two
“It is possible that the subjects expected further questioning if they did not answer in an appeasing manner, and they would have preferred to answer as few questions as possible. It is also possible that they associated the EWB-UA interview team with the NGO that taught them how to use the filters, in which they wanted to prove that they were responsible enough to merit their ownership of the filter.”

It is possible that the Cambodian people may have expected more questions if they did not answer with a positive answer, and they would have rather to answer as few questions as possible. It is also possible that they thought the EWB-UA interview team was associated with the NGO team that taught them how to use the filters. They wanted to make sure they answered positive incase the NGO would take the filters away because of not correct use of the filter.

I compared the two articles Bullying and Cyberbullying by Richard Donegan and the article Women in TV Broadcast News written by Mariah Irvin. These two articles are quite different as they do their research in two different ways. They are the same in the way that they both have the same structure but, they are giving the reader information in two different ways. They start with an abstract and introduction and end with a conclusion. How they lay out their knowledge is similar but, the knowledge they are talking about is different.
For Richard Donegan article he goes very in-depth into what bullying is and the different kinds of bullying. I thought he did a great job in how he broke the article up into different parts. Every type of bullying had a different section. Because of this it made it an article very easy to read. It is something that does not take a lot of effort to get everything out of it. I never caught myself having to re-read a passage because I didn’t understand it. I think you can attribute this towards the way that Mr. Donegan breaks the article down.
For Mariah article she is doing more of a case study. She has to go out and do her own research as oppose to Mr. Donegan who was getting his research more through the readings of other peoples work. Mariah does a good job of laying out why she is doing her research and what she is trying to get out of it. Through the rest of the paper she lays out her findings through graphs and charts. She does a good job of explaining the numbers in these graphs and charts. This is where the biggest difference comes from these two papers.
Other than how these two papers are set up they are not very similar. This is mostly because they are doing two different kinds of research. I think these two articles is a good example of how somebody articles can be the same structure but, the details be different.

Wiki 5

I did my fifth wiki article on Is Generation Y addicted to Social Media? This article is written by Jaclyn Cabral.
In Jaclyn article there is both quantitative and qualitative research done. It was almost split in half with the first half of the article her giving an overview of the subject. She goes into a lot of what researchers say. In the second half is when she gets into the numbers and has graphs and charts to show her research. With all of the research done she did not put much of her own views into the article.
The best showing of limiting expressions I could find in this article is when she would criticize her findings. She twice makes the comments as to her research maybe not being broad enough in saying “ However, this study was limited because the sample consisted primarily of women (78.3%)” she also makes the comment. “ This study had a further limitation with regards to the gathering of research by relying heavily on self-report assessment” I found this impressive that she would mention her shortcomings of her research.
In this article she uses the past verb tense. This can be noticed in the previous two quotes I have mentioned when she talks about her research. Throughout the article there are more examples of past tense verb usage.

Preparing a Hospital and Community for Disaster
Introduction

When an employee first enters hospital employment, they may not consider the plan the hospital has in place for dealing with disasters. Years ago, employees rarely even knew about the disaster preparedness plans in their hospital. However, in the past decade situations have changed, and employees are more aware of the procedures that exist for dealing with disasters. After the September 11, 2001 tragedy in New York City, the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans on August 29, 2005, and the bioterrorism scares involving anthrax and smallpox in the last seven years, hospitals have been forced to reevaluate the effectiveness of their current disaster preparedness plans. They must assess whether the current plans will actually work in the event of an emergency, and the administration must decide what changes must be made in order to make the plans more successful. Should these changes and alterations be left up to the hospital itself, or should the government take a more central role in all disaster preparations? These questions must be answered before our hospitals are put to the real test by a true national disaster. We will later discuss several approaches to solving the issue of disaster preparation, and evaluate which will be the best option for hospitals to adopt.
Conclusion
As discussed throughout this paper, disaster preparedness has been brought to the public eye in the past decade. After disasters such as 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the anthrax scare, hospitals have realized that their disaster plans may be lacking. They have begun to revise their plans to cover more types of disasters but have stumbled upon a number of roadblocks. Are they creating a plan that will be effective in a real emergency? Should the government help form these plans? These questions need answers, and after reviewing the approaches discusses in this paper, the best approach is to tackle this problem at the local level.
By involving all departments and outside organizations in disaster preparation, we ensure that all voices are heard. Training and practicing the disaster procedures with the community keeps communication open and prepares everyone for a disaster. By doing the utmost to prepare for a disaster, we guarantee that if one strikes, we will be able to handle whatever happens. Keeping preparations at a local level allows every opportunity to strengthen our relationship with the greater community. By working together, we will ensure that we can restore our community to its original state. The most important thing is to remember the importance of practice; as without it, even the best disaster plans will fail.
In this article Lauren Ford writes a conclusion and introduction that are very similar. All of the questions that she asks in the introduction get answered in the conclusion. Here is one example of comparable statements she makes in the both the introduction and conclusion. “After the September 11, 2001 tragedy in New York City, the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans on August 29, 2005, and the bioterrorism scares involving anthrax and smallpox in the last seven years, hospitals have been forced to reevaluate the effectiveness of their current disaster preparedness plans” In the conclusion she makes another statement that is almost identical to the one in the introduction “. After disasters such as 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the anthrax scare, hospitals have realized that their disaster plans may be lacking. They have begun to revise their plans to cover more types of disasters but have stumbled upon a number of roadblocks” She also does a good job answering her questions from the introduction in the conclusion. She asks about if the government or people on the local level should be making changes in her introduction. In her conclusion she answers that question with saying. “These questions need answers, and after reviewing the approaches discusses in this paper, the best approach is to tackle this problem at the local level.”

• I’m not sure what Genre I would be writing to. But, I’m going to be making a pamphlet type project. I will be giving information in ways where people will not want to sit and read a lot. So I will have to make my points short and be able to give out the information in the simplest ways possible to not lose the reader in the little time I have their attention.
• Audience is people in Recreation Programs. They are Laypeople (cool word) Their background will be they are parents and kids in the group. For the parents they will probably think they are experts in the field because parents most of the time think they are always right and what they are doing is right. The kids will have a don’t care attitude because, kids usually don’t care about what they are eating.
• My purpose is to inform. Hopefully I will be able to get the people who read my work to start thinking about how they eat and hopefully give them the push to start making changes in how they look and eat food.
• I will use the information I learned from the first two projects. I will have to change the content by making it into small points and changing from different audiences so I will have to change how I present the information every time.
